What is Reaction-Injection Molding? (RIM)
Reaction-Injection Molding (RIM) is a molding process for producing components with variable substrates. Polyols and isocyanates are mixed in liquid form in a (PUR) reaction machine. This reaction mass is then poured into a mold. RIM combines the advantages of injection molding for shaping plastic components with the simultaneous coating of these components. This allows for the production of parts with complex geometries and different surface structures in a single production step.
With the most advanced RIM systems, it is possible to finish plastic injection molded parts in a single operation with our coating (Two-In-One-Shot). On one side, the substrate is poured into a mold and cured, and in the next step, it is directly flooded with our PURIFLOW® coating system. Thus, the final surface can not only feel very different, but also have a very different surface structure depending on the mold, and depending on the formulation of the PU system, the finished components can exhibit a wide range of properties, from very hard to very elastic and soft.
Discover unexpected possibilities with PURIFLOW®
From high-gloss to matte surfaces, a silky satin finish, or a textured texture – the range of possibilities with PURIFLOW® is enormous. Whether transparent, solid-colored, or equipped with a variety of effects, the scope offered by our PURIFLOW® coating system is limitless. For very special design requirements, impressive surface finishes can be achieved: from various colors to tactile experiences like soft leather imitations or brushed aluminum to stunning 3D effects. True to the motto “The look must match the feel,” we make sure that appearance and feel always aline. Soft-touch, rough or soft leather, or ultra-smooth sleekness – everything is possible.
Additionally, the PURIFLOW® surface can be backed with various films, making the end result not only beautiful but also functional. For example, lights, heating films, or touchscreens can be integrated, giving your design new dimensions.
PURIFLOW® is self-healing.
A small scratch on the front panel? Accidentally scratched the shiny surface? Not a problem. With the “Self-healing” or “Reflow effect,” it is possible to restore deformation scratches on the surface. As long as no product has been removed by the scratch, the “Self-healing effect” will occur after a certain period. Depending on the formulation of the PURIFLOW® system, this can happen at room temperature or with the help of a heat source, such as a hairdryer or sunlight.
RIM und PURIFLOW® – a perfect Team
Especially in the automotive industry, the RIM process is gaining increasing popularity for both interior and exterior areas. But in many other areas as well, RIM and PURIFLOW® can improve surface quality and significantly increase profitability. We would be happy to discuss in a personal meeting the opportunities and possibilities this process can offer you.
PURIFLOW® is the future
Even though RIM technology and our PURIFLOW® are currently mainly used in the automotive industry, we see a future in many other sectors. The technology is suitable for all surfaces that require first-class quality and specific features, such as UV resistance and self-healing capabilities. Furthermore, PURIFLOW® opens up a vast design variety for beautiful and functional surfaces.
